Working at height

Location:

Watts mortuary chapel built and designed by Mary Watts in Guildford, Surrey

Summary:

Extensive cross section analysis and solubility test on one quadrant of the chapel's interior to determine the workings and stratigraphy of the polychromy prior to conservation treatment. Condition reporting friable areas was also carried out.

Research found concrete foundation with plastered surface and plaster build up. This has been sealed with clear coating and painted. We identified several gilded surfaces which has been prepared with a bole layer, that has been overpainted as well. Solubility test found all pigments to be insoluble in water except on gilded surfaces, therefore, aqueous cleaning and consolidation is possible.
